WWI memories and stories

Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum (CIMM) is seeking stories and material that show the impact of WWI on Skinningrove and the local area for a new exhibition and illustrated booklet funded by the Heritage Lottery Volunteers are currently researching many archives around the region, but we’d really like to hear some local stories that you may have been told by parents and grandparents about life at the time. We particularly need source material – images, documents and objects (that we would photograph) for our exhibition and booklet. Themes we are planning are:

  • Supporting the war effort through industry
  • Fundraising activities for the war effort
  • The Co-op and rationing
  • Growing up in wartime
  • Coastal defences and the Zeppelin raids
  • Refugees and migrant workers (munitions)
  • Return (the aftermath)

There may be other themes, which come to light, but we hope that by early August to have completed our research, ready to start on the exhibition and booklet. Material not used will be held in the museum’s archive for future research and publication. We intend using material for our WWI education sessions, too. This is one-off opportunity that we are keen to maximize, so if there is anything at all you can offer please get in touch with us at CIMM. It’s probably best to contact David, the Project Coordinator, direct on walmsleyd2@aol.com Or just leave a message at the museum.
